Ferruled Mesh

In contrast to handwoven mesh, ferruled mesh can be made in virtually unlimited sizes.

Ferrule mesh is made up of parallel stainless steel cables joined by stainless steel sleeves.

HMJ Design net uses considerably thicker ferrules than what would normally be found on mesh in the market, as we want the mesh to be durable on adverse conditions such as snow and wind loads.

Using ferrule mesh has a few advantages over hand woven mesh; Most notably the tolerances are tighter, since ferrules can be mounted on the wires with greater precision and consistency. This allows for use in spaces where the panels are precisely determined, such as facade infill, balustrades, making it the ideal material in industrial and architectural contexts.

Ferrule mesh is also dimensionally stable, meaning that it will conserve its original shape even if pull is exerted across the diagonal of the mesh panel. This is not always the case with handwoven mesh, which can be pulled out of shape, if care is not taken to orient the mesh correctly. Furthermore, producers with inadequate quality control over the manufacturing methods have a tendency to produce hand woven mesh panels that are not rectangular, but parallelograms, meaning that corners are not truly 90°. This has the consequence that a panel can be impossible to install correctly. HMJ Design’s ferrule mesh does not suffer from this phenomenon.

Due to the dimensional stability, ferrule mesh is also the best choice for tensile structures, as it can be manufactured and installed to produce curved or double curved net surfaces. Using iterative software, we are able to specify 2D workshop drawings for the mesh, to make certain that the nets adapts precisely to the actual curved surface of a given project.

The disadvantages of ferrule mesh in comparison to handwoven mesh is that that self weight is higher due to the added ferrules, and consequently the price is also somewhat higher, as more components are required for the production. In addition, if the highest possible transparency of the mesh is a priority for your project, we would recommend using handwoven mesh, as the profile of the knots in woven mesh is narrower than ferrule joints.

Dimensions of aperture width and length, side lengths etc. can be given at request.

Let us know the approximate specification of net you are looking for, and we will revert to you.

We produce in wire thicknesses from 1,0 to 3,2 mm, and eye sizes from 20x20 to 150x150 and beyond.

The mesh can also be supplied in a matte black oxide finish, which cuts down on reflections and glare, for use case where the mesh is intended to be less conspicuous, for example in zoo settings.

HMJ Design also offer a full suite of engineering and design services related to the construction with ferrule and hand woven mesh, e.g. statical analyses, dimensioning, construction details, digital 3D modelling. Please contact us for further details.
